Group tours are cheaper per person and social; private tours ($150–300+) buy a flexible pace, a custom route and a guide all to yourself. The twist: private is priced per group, so for a family or party of four or more the per-person math often becomes competitive with booking everyone onto a premium group tour — run the numbers before defaulting to group.

In this category the spread is wide — from a few stops up to 12+ stated tastings — at overlapping prices, so tastings-per-dollar is the honest value metric. Five of our 15 tours state their count in the listing; for the rest we say "not stated" rather than guess. A tour serving 10+ dishes around $90 is the value sweet spot.

Eating solo is far cheaper — market dishes run $2–7 each. What a tour buys is the guide: vendor knowledge, translation at Korean-only stalls, a curated sequence, and cultural context. That's most valuable on a first visit or with limited time; confident repeat visitors can often skip it. Our honest take: do one early, then explore solo.

More ground than the single-market walks: multi-stop routes combine markets like Gwangjang or Namdaemun with neighborhoods such as Ikseon-dong's hanok lanes, Insadong, or a night-view finish. Private tours customize the route entirely — including around dietary needs — which is a big part of what the premium buys.
