📄When reviewers found Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market open or closed: nights, mornings, Sundays and holidays, in 551 reviews.
A crowded aisle in a covered Seoul market by day: stalls stacked with golden fried pancakes, vendors in red aprons, Korean shop signs and a green steel roof overhead
💡Quick Answer

Seoul’s markets keep different clocks, going by 551 dated reviews. At Namdaemun Market, 26 reviewers found shops shut by early evening, at times from 5 to 9 pm. At Gwangjang Market, 40 describe food stalls busy at night, but four who came at 8:30 pm or later found many closed. At Mangwon Market, 19 arrived in the morning to closed stalls, and ten say cooked food starts around 11. Sundays thin out Gwangjang and Namdaemun, not Mangwon. We did not verify current hours.

After Dark: Gwangjang Market Feeds You, Namdaemun Market Has Gone Home

A market does not have one closing time. Each shop and each stall keeps its own, and no listing records that. What a review records is narrower and more useful: the hour someone arrived and what they found.
Across Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market we hold 3,923 reviews collected without filtering by rating. In 551 of them the reviewer says something about time: an hour, a day, the morning, the night, a holiday. We read all 551 and sorted them by what they report.

Namdaemun Market is the day market. Twenty-six reviews say it closes in the early evening, or describe arriving to find the shops shut. Thirteen of them give a clock time, and those run from 5 pm to 9 pm.
vendors DO pack up at 8 or 9PM and then it becomes a dead zone — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 2 stars, November 2019
It does not go fully dark. Thirty Namdaemun reviews describe street food or dinner there in the evening. Seven say the food carts set up in the late afternoon as the shops close, and five describe a wholesale shift that trades late at night. Two reviews describe the handover as it happens:
A lot of the shops closed down at around 6pm, but a lot of the street food vendors set up around 5 — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, October 2019
Gwangjang Market splits the same way, with the weight on the other side. Twenty-two reviews found something closed from mid-afternoon on. In twelve of those, what had closed was the fabric, clothing and bedding shops, while the food stalls carried on. Forty reviews describe the food stalls open and busy in the evening, and nine of them give a clock time between 7 and 11 pm.
Many resources on the internet say it closes at 6PM and this may be true for many of the shops, however the food scene seems to be going strong at least until 10:00 PM. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, September 2019
The food has a limit too. Four reviewers who arrived at 8:30 pm or later found many of the food stalls closed. One, on a weekday, found the market closed and dead at 8:30. One found about half the stalls shut at 9, and one was turned away from two places at 9 on a Saturday. The fourth, written in Korean, says that on weekdays most of the market closes at about 9 apart from the stalls in the middle.
Mangwon Market has the least to say about the night. Fourteen reviews describe it in the evening, and three found it closing. Two of those put the hour at about 8 pm:
Closed by 8 so make sure to go earlier than that — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, June 2026
The trade-off: at Gwangjang Market the hour when the food is liveliest is the hour when the rest of the market has shut. Go at 7 pm to eat and you will not be buying fabric or bedding on the same trip.

In the Morning: Mangwon Market Starts Late, Namdaemun Market Starts Early

The mistake reviewers describe most often in the morning is assuming a market opens early because it is a market.
🌅 In the morningGwangjang Market (1,458)Namdaemun Market (1,376)Mangwon Market (1,089)
Arrived in the morning to stalls not yet open, or warns against coming early0.4% (6)0.5% (7)1.7% (19)
Puts the opening at about 9 am0.3% (5)0.4% (5)0.5% (5)
Ate breakfast there, or recommends it for breakfast1.2% (18)1.2% (16)0.6% (6)
Recommends going early, or went early and found it quiet0.7% (10)0.9% (12)0.7% (8)
At Mangwon Market, 19 reviews describe arriving in the morning to closed stalls, or warn against coming early. Ten of them say the cooked-food stalls start at around 11, and nine of those ten are written in Chinese. Five reviews put the opening at about 9 am, and one of them adds that the stalls trading at that hour are mostly produce, meat, seafood and side dishes. Two found most stalls open at about 10:30.
Most stores only start to open after 9am. Famous green chilli pepper only opens at 11am. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, April 2025
Namdaemun Market is the opposite. Nine reviews say it trades from the early morning, and 16 describe eating breakfast there. Seven reviewers who arrived in the morning found shops not yet open, and one of them, writing in Japanese, explains the split: early in the day, only the places that serve food are open.
Went here at 7AM, there was no line on the famous vegetable hotteok at the entrance. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, October 2024
Gwangjang Market sits between the two. Eighteen reviews describe breakfast there, and five put the opening at about 9 am. Six found stalls not yet open in the morning. Two of those six are about the vintage clothing floor upstairs, which one review from October 2025 says now opens at 11. Three reviews say the crowd arrives from about 11.
The trade-off: the quiet hour and the full menu do not overlap. Ten Gwangjang reviews, twelve Namdaemun reviews and eight Mangwon reviews recommend going early or found it quiet when they did, and at all three markets other reviewers went early and found part of the market still shut.

Sundays, Mondays and Holidays: What Closes at Each Market

The day of the week changes each market in a different way.
📅 By day of the weekGwangjang Market (1,458)Namdaemun Market (1,376)Mangwon Market (1,089)
Says something is closed on Sunday, or that Sunday is the rest day1.0% (15)0.8% (11)0.0% (0)
Went on a Sunday and found food or crowds1.0% (15)0.6% (8)1.0% (11)
Says stalls close on Mondays0.1% (1)0.0% (0)0.3% (3)
Went on a public holiday and found stalls or shops closed0.5% (7)0.2% (3)0.2% (2)
Says weekends are packed, or advises a weekday0.8% (12)0.6% (8)2.3% (25)
At Gwangjang Market, 15 reviews say something is closed on Sunday and 15 describe going on a Sunday and finding food and crowds. Nine reviews say both: the shops that sell goods were closed and the food stalls were open.
we visited on a Sunday when only the food section was open — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, December 2024
At Namdaemun Market, eleven reviews say Sunday is a rest day or that much of the market is closed. Eight went on a Sunday and found street stalls or food stalls trading, and seven reviews say both. Three more say that part of the market closes or keeps shorter hours at weekends, without naming the day.
I love this market but unfortunately on Sundays closed. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, June 2025
Mangwon Market is different. Eleven reviewers describe going on a Sunday and not one reports a closure. Its closing day, in the reviews, is Monday: three of them, from January 2023, October 2024 and October 2025, say that some of the best-known stalls are shut on Mondays.
Public holidays close more than Sundays do. Twelve reviews describe going on a holiday and finding stalls or shops closed: seven at Gwangjang Market, three at Namdaemun Market and two at Mangwon Market. Four name Chuseok, three name New Year’s Day and two name the Lunar New Year. At Gwangjang Market, five holiday reviews say the food stalls were open anyway.
We went on New Year’s Day so only the food stalls and a few snack and clothing stalls were open. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 4 stars, January 2020
The trade-off: a Sunday at Gwangjang Market or Namdaemun Market works if you are going to eat and fails if you are going to shop. One Gwangjang reviewer who went on a Sunday for the vintage clothing found all but one shop closed.

Weekends: The Crowd Complaint Is Loudest at Mangwon Market

Gwangjang Market has the reputation for crowds. On the specific question of weekends, the reviews point somewhere else.
Twenty-five Mangwon reviews say weekends are packed or advise a weekday, which is 2.3% of its sample. At Gwangjang Market it is 12 reviews, or 0.8%, and at Namdaemun Market 8 reviews, or 0.6%. Eighteen of the 25 Mangwon reviews are written in Korean, and five of them are about parking. These are regulars describing a market that fills when the neighborhood is off work.
It is too crowded on weekends, so I recommend visiting on a weekday. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, June 2026
At Gwangjang Market the weekday offers less relief. Nine reviews say it was crowded on a weekday too, a Monday and a Thursday afternoon among them.
The trade-off: the weekday that empties Mangwon Market can also be the Monday when its famous stalls are closed. Three reviews say so, and one of them names the hotteok stall.

When the Posted Hours Were Wrong

Eleven reviews name where they got the hours and then say the hours did not hold: Google Maps, a guidebook, the internet, a sign, the stated closing time. Five are about Gwangjang Market, five about Namdaemun Market and one about Mangwon Market.
the hours on Google Maps go until 10:30 so we hoped for more life at that hour — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 3 stars, June 2024
At Namdaemun Market, two reviews in Japanese had been told the market runs until 11 pm; one arrived after 8 and the other after 9, and both found nearly everything shut. At Gwangjang Market, a reviewer who went on a Sunday for the vintage clothing says the signs and the listing both gave Sunday hours and that all but one shop was closed.
The error runs in both directions. The reviewer quoted earlier had read that Gwangjang Market closes at 6 pm and found the food going at 10. A Namdaemun reviewer had read that the market is closed on Sundays and found street sellers trading.
That is the reason this article gives no timetable. A published closing time describes a market as if it were one business. Reviewers describe hundreds of businesses that stop at different hours, and the posted figure matches some of them.
The trade-off: a dated review tells you what one person found on one day. It is narrower than a timetable. It is also the only one of the two that was checked by someone standing in the market.

Methodology

Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses the rated reviews of the three markets for which we hold a representative sample, collected without filtering by rating: 1,458 for Gwangjang Market, 1,376 for Namdaemun Market and 1,089 for Mangwon Market, from Google Maps and TripAdvisor. A second pass aimed at low ratings is never counted here.
What was read. We searched the 3,923 reviews for words about time, in every language in the sample: open, closed, the days of the week, morning, evening, night, holiday, and clock times. A second, wider search added afternoon, noon and other ways of saying early or not yet open. Together they return 551 reviews, written between 2018 and 2026. All 551 were read in full, in the language they were written in, and sorted by hand. A review can count in more than one row.
Counts are floors. A review that describes a closed market without using any of those words is not counted. Two reviews that appear twice with identical text are counted once.
Clock times. Where a table gives hours, they are the hours reviewers wrote down. Thirteen Gwangjang reviews and thirteen Namdaemun reviews give a time for finding something closed.
Current hours were not verified. Opening times and closing days change, and a review records what was true on the day it was written. Nothing here is a timetable. Check a current source before you plan around a specific hour.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted, because a translation is not someone’s words.
What this article does not do. It covers three markets, not Seoul, and it does not say which hour is best. Weather is not covered here.
