Which Seoul Market Is Least Crowded?

The crowd is the first thing many visitors write about Seoul’s markets, and it decides whether the visit works for a family, an older traveler or anyone who dislikes being pressed on all sides. We read every review of Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market that says the market is crowded.

One review in ten of Gwangjang Market says it is crowded: 10.0%, against 4.8% at Namdaemun Market and 5.5% at Mangwon Market. That is about twice as often.
The gap is wider in unhappy reviews. Among reviews of three stars or fewer, the crowd comes up in 15.3% at Gwangjang Market, 10.4% at Mangwon Market and 6.3% at Namdaemun Market.
The trade-off: a review that says a market is crowded is not always a complaint. Many of these reviewers gave four or five stars and call the bustle part of the charm. The figures show where the crowd is mentioned, and the sections below show what it did to the visit.

Mangwon Market: Calm for Visitors, Packed for Locals

Mangwon Market gets two opposite descriptions, and they come from two different groups of reviewers.
Fifty-six reviews say it is not crowded or is calmer than other markets. Forty are in English, fourteen in Chinese and two in Japanese; none is in Korean. Fifteen of them make the comparison with Gwangjang Market in so many words.
Not as crowded as Gwangjang. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, July 2026
Sixty reviews say Mangwon Market is crowded, and 43 of those are in Korean. Sixteen point to the weekend.
It is too crowded on weekends, so I recommend visiting on a weekday. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, June 2026
Local market. Try to avoid weekend. Too many people — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, April 2024
Korean reviewers are blunt about it. One says there were so many people it was impossible to stand and look. Another, who lives nearby, avoids the market on weekends altogether. A third found it so uncomfortable they will not go back.
Both descriptions are accurate. Visitors arrive from Gwangjang Market and find Mangwon Market easy by comparison; residents remember it before it was famous. Nine reviewers found it quiet on a weekday or in the morning: a Monday at nine, a Tuesday at half past one, a Friday at eleven, ten o’clock on two different mornings.
Person with crowds anxiety probably should pick off peak times, maybe weekdays or after lunch. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, December 2025
The trade-off: the quiet hours are also the hours when part of the market is not open yet. One family found that most stalls open after 11 a.m.

Namdaemun Market: Fewer Crowd Complaints, Wider Streets

Sixty-six reviews of Namdaemun Market say it is crowded, 4.8% of the sample. Seven say weekends are worse and weekdays better.
Extremely crowded on weekends. Weekdays are recommended. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, May 2026
Two reviewers say it fills up from mid-morning, one naming 10 a.m. and the other 11. Three say it gets busier in the late afternoon or evening. A Japanese reviewer in 2019 calls it always crowded and recommends the morning for anyone who wants it empty.
Two reviewers explain why the same number of people feels different here than at Gwangjang Market: the market is outdoors and the streets are wider.
so much easier to navigate even in a large crowd — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, March 2025
Five reviews describe the crowd spoiling the visit. One reviewer felt rushed through a meal in a tight food alley, one says the number of people was tiring within minutes, and one, traveling alone at a busy hour, was turned away from every restaurant in the hairtail alley. Others take it in stride:
Very crowded and people bump into you but it was a nice experience — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, May 2026
The trade-off: Namdaemun Market is the one where reviewers warn parents, and the food alleys are the narrowest part of it. Fewer crowd complaints overall does not make it the easy market for a stroller.

Gwangjang Market: Crowd and Heat Together

Gwangjang Market has the highest share of crowd mentions and the highest share of heat mentions. Thirty-five reviews say it was hot, stuffy or humid, 2.4% of the sample, against 0.9% at Namdaemun Market and 0.3% at Mangwon Market. Thirty-four of the 35 were written between June and September.
The market is covered, which is why reviewers recommend it for a rainy day, and the same roof holds the heat of the grills in summer. One family put it this way:
It was too advanced for my North American family in the humidity. — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 3 stars, August 2025
The trade-off: the roof that makes Gwangjang Market the rainy-day choice is the same roof reviewers blame in August. Our article on when to go to Gwangjang Market covers the hours reviewers found quiet.

Forty-three reviews describe a visit with children or family, and they lean the same way as the crowd figures. Five reviewers of Mangwon Market say it suits children and none warns against it. Six warn parents about Namdaemun Market. Gwangjang Market is split, three in favor and four warnings.
Little Kids will not enjoy this place. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, April 2025
make sure to keep them close so they dont get caught up in the hustle — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, September 2025
Six reviews mention a stroller. It is called inconvenient at Gwangjang Market and difficult at Namdaemun Market, in two reviews each, and easy at Mangwon Market in one.
The trade-off: these are about one review in a hundred at each market, and most of the praise for Mangwon Market comes from Korean families who know it.

Toilets

Thirty-seven reviews mention toilets, twenty-one of them at Gwangjang Market. Eight reviewers of Gwangjang Market call them clean and four complain. One review from 2026 describes a toilet block on three floors, with the ground floor for visitors with disabilities.
Loved the clean bathrooms. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, August 2019
Also the bathroom situation is atrocious. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 4 stars, September 2026
Two Japanese reviewers of Gwangjang Market raise safety. One says the toilets are in a dim passage and suggests that women on their own use a nearby hotel instead. The other describes a friend being followed from the public toilet by a man at night, until stallholders called the police.
At Namdaemun Market the toilets are inside the buildings, which is why visitors think there are none.
Toilets can be tricky to find. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, April 2026
Restroom are available in most buildings and these are clean. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, November 2024
At Mangwon Market, four reviewers writing in Chinese mention a public toilet; one says it is the only one, near the middle of the market, with its opening hours posted. Three other reviewers report no toilet paper or no soap.
The trade-off: paper is the recurring detail. Reviewers of Gwangjang Market and Namdaemun Market note that it is taken from a dispenser outside the stall, that some toilets have none, and that in some it is not flushed.

Wheelchairs, Steps and Luggage: What the Reviews Do Not Say

On physical access the reviews are nearly silent. Seven reviews in 3,923 say anything. A Korean reviewer calls Mangwon Market a good environment for wheelchairs and strollers. One reviewer mentions the accessible floor of the toilet block at Gwangjang Market. At Namdaemun Market one reviewer warns of uneven ground with gravel near the children’s clothing street, and two describe shops spread over upper floors and a crowded basement.
Two reviews are about bags. A reviewer writing in Chinese ate at a Gwangjang Market stall holding three pieces of luggage because staff would not lend a chair for them. Another describes a shop at Namdaemun Market that keeps your purchases while you walk the market.
The trade-off: no review describes a ramp, a lift or a step-free route, and we did not verify any on site. Seven reviews are not evidence of access. They are the reason this section is short.

Methodology

Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses three samples of rated reviews from Google Maps and TripAdvisor, each collected without filtering by rating: 1,458 reviews of Gwangjang Market, 1,376 of Namdaemun Market and 1,089 of Mangwon Market.
Crowds. One search pattern, in every language in the samples, was run on all three markets, and every match was read: 117 at Namdaemun Market and 139 at Mangwon Market for this article, and those of Gwangjang Market for our earlier research on its complaints. A review counts when it says the market is crowded, packed or very busy. A “busy market” in passing, a street “packed with stalls” and a layout described as confusing do not count.
Children, toilets and access. Separate searches matched 127 reviews about children and family, 40 about toilets and 57 about mobility, luggage and steps. Each was read in full; the counts in the second table are what remained. Most matches for mobility were “accessible by subway” or a suitcase bought at the market.
Rates and counts. Percentages are shares of each market’s sample. Where a row has too few reviews to be a rate, it is given as a count. Multipliers are given only where both markets have at least ten reviews. Counts are floors.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It does not measure how many people are in a market, and it does not verify toilets, ramps, lifts or opening times today. A review records what one visitor found on one day.
