Most of these reviewers were not complaining. Fifty-three of the 66 gave the market four or five stars.
Quite crowded market but was worth the visit! — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, March 2026
Crowded but lively market with variety of offers — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, December 2025
The trade-off: a review that says “crowded” and gives five stars is describing the market working as intended. The warnings worth reading are the minority below.
Weekends, and the Argument About Weekdays
| 🕙 When | What reviewers report | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend | Worse than weekdays | 7 |
| Weekday | Calmer, according to four; busy anyway, according to three | 4 and 3 |
| Early morning | Empty, and the hotteok stall has no queue | 1 |
| From 10 or 11 a.m. | Starts to fill | 2 |
| Late afternoon and evening | Busier, according to three; quieter, according to one | 3 and 1 |
Seven reviews say weekends are worse.
Extremely crowded on weekends. Weekdays are recommended. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, May 2026
Less busy during the week. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, May 2025
A Korean reviewer who went on a Monday found few people and was glad of it, and adds that the weekend would be packed. Another Korean reviewer says weekdays are the time to look around at leisure and weekends the time to go for the atmosphere.
Three reviewers disagree about how much the weekday helps.
The weekends are crowded, but honestly, crowded most days ! — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, September 2025
This place is normally busy even on weekdays. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, December 2024
The trade-off: every reviewer who compares the two says the weekend is busier. The disagreement is only about whether a weekday is calm or merely less full.
By the Hour
Two reviewers say when the market starts to fill.
before it starts getting crowded around 11am onwards — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 3 stars, April 2025
does get busy after 10 a.m. — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, January 2020
A Japanese reviewer in 2019, who calls the market always crowded, describes the early morning: the well-known vegetable hotteok stall had no queue just after it opened at about nine. The same reviewer recommends the morning for an empty market and the night for atmosphere, when the food carts come out.
Three reviews say the late afternoon and evening are busier.
Gets very busy towards late afternoon. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, June 2026
gets crowded during evenings — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, January 2025
One reviewer who visited several times says the opposite:
best preferred during later in the afternoon as crowd is lesser — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, April 2026
The trade-off: the morning is the quiet end of the day and also the thin end. Reviewers elsewhere note that the food stalls and carts appear later, so an early visit suits shopping more than eating.
The Tight Spot Is the Food Alleys
Six reviews place the squeeze in the food alleys, and five describe the crowd spoiling the visit. Two reviews are in both groups.
The food stalls spaces were so tight. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 3 stars, April 2026
That reviewer goes on to say people were waiting in line at the stalls, the meal felt rushed, and it spoiled the experience. Another describes a set-menu stall as a place to squeeze in, eat and go. A third calls the food alleys busy, hot and narrow. A Japanese reviewer found the sit-down shop for buns and noodles very crowded at lunchtime.
The hardest account is from a Japanese traveler on a solo trip in 2026 who came for braised hairtail after landing before dawn. It was a busy hour, and every restaurant in the alley refused a single diner. The review’s advice is to go with at least one other person.
One two-star review, in Japanese, is a single line: too many people, tired at once.
The trade-off: the food alleys are the reason many visitors come, and they are the narrowest part of the market. Going at an off hour helps with the queue and does nothing for the width.
Easier to Walk Than Gwangjang Market
Two reviewers who have been to both explain why Namdaemun Market feels less pressed.
This outdoor market feels less tight and crowded vs Gwangjang Market. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, July 2024
so much easier to navigate even in a large crowd — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, March 2025
The first calls it an outdoor market. The second gives a reason: the streets are broader than at Gwangjang Market.
The trade-off: two reviews are a thin basis on their own. They agree with the larger figure: crowding is mentioned half as often here as at Gwangjang Market.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses a sample of 1,376 rated reviews of Namdaemun Market from Google Maps and TripAdvisor, collected without filtering by rating, and compares it with a sample of 1,458 reviews of Gwangjang Market read with the same search.
What was counted. A search for crowding, in every language in the sample, matched 117 reviews of Namdaemun Market. Each was read. Sixty-six say the market is crowded, packed or very busy. The other 51 use the words for something else: a “busy market” in passing, a street “packed with stalls,” a layout described as confusing.
Counts are floors. The percentage is a share of the sample of 1,376. The figures by day and hour are counts of a few reviews each, and where reviewers contradict each other both sides are shown.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It does not measure how many people are in the market at any hour, and it does not verify opening times today. A review records what one visitor found on one day.
