way too crowded — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 2 stars, October 2023
The trade-off: neither group is wrong. A visitor measures Mangwon Market against Gwangjang Market, where one review in ten mentions the crowd. A local measures it against what the neighborhood market was before it became a destination.
What Visitors Mean by Calm
Fifteen reviews say outright that Mangwon Market is less crowded than Gwangjang Market. Others compare it with Namdaemun Market or with “the bigger tourist markets” in general.

which made it easy and comfortable to walk around without feeling rushed or overcrowded — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, January 2026
Several explain the ease by the shape of the place: the market is one straight covered lane, shorter than the others, with the food stalls at one end. A Spanish-speaking reviewer puts the two things together, saying it fills with people and you can still walk comfortably.
The trade-off: only some of these reviewers say when they went. Those who do mostly name a weekday or a morning.
What Locals Mean by Packed
Sixteen reviews point to the weekend. Korean reviewers are specific about it. One says Saturdays and Sundays are always crowded. One, who lives in the neighborhood and goes often, stays away on weekends. One says there were so many people it was impossible to stand and look at a stall. One found it so uncomfortable they will not return.
It is too crowded on weekends, so I recommend visiting on a weekday. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, June 2026
Offers a lot of food stalls but very crowded on weekends — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, February 2025
Some of them say why. One Korean reviewer says the crowds came when the neighboring street of cafés became famous, and that prices went up with them. Another notes that the market is constantly on television.
Not every review that calls it crowded is a complaint. Forty-seven of the 60 give four or five stars.
The market was insanely crowded, yet remarkably clean. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, March 2025
The trade-off: the reviewers who know the market best are the ones who say to avoid it on the days most visitors are free.

Four reviews describe it filling up later: more people as the afternoon goes on, crowded in the evening, busy from weekend lunchtime. A Korean reviewer who arrived on a Sunday morning found parking and space, and left when the afternoon crowd came. One visitor arrived on a Sunday at about five and caught it emptying again.
I went on a Sunday around 5 when the crowd was starting to die down. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, November 2025
The trade-off: the quiet morning has a cost. Three reviewers note that stalls open late, the best-known ones at about 11 a.m. One reviewer writing in Chinese recommends arriving at 11 or at about 2 p.m., when the shops are open and the lunch crowd is thinner.
If You Dislike Crowds
One reviewer who found Mangwon Market very crowded writes for exactly this reader.
Person with crowds anxiety probably should pick off peak times, maybe weekdays or after lunch. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, December 2025
Another gives a different tip:

Two Korean reviewers mention the second market across the road, the World Cup Market. One describes it as a twin of Mangwon Market with few people in it. The other says the area has two parts, one quiet and one very crowded.
The trade-off: two reviews are not much to go on, and we did not verify what the second market sells.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses a sample of 1,089 rated reviews of Mangwon Market from Google Maps and TripAdvisor, collected without filtering by rating, and compares it with a sample of 1,458 reviews of Gwangjang Market read with the same search.
What was counted. A search for crowding, in every language in the sample, matched 139 reviews of Mangwon Market. Each was read. Sixty say the market is crowded, packed or full of people. Fifty-six say it is not crowded or is calmer than other markets. The remaining 23 use the words for something else, such as a stall that is busy or food “packed” with flavor.
Language. The language of a review is the language it was written in. It stands in for who is writing, a resident or a visitor, and it is not proof of either.
Counts are floors. The two percentages are shares of the sample of 1,089. The other figures are counts.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It does not measure how many people are in the market at any hour, and it does not verify opening times today. A review records what one visitor found on one day.
