Breakfast is a small subject in these reviews and a consistent one. Forty of the 3,923 reviews in our three market samples describe eating breakfast at the market or recommend it for that: 18 at Gwangjang Market, 16 at Namdaemun Market and 6 at Mangwon Market.
| 🍳 Breakfast | Gwangjang Market (1,458) | Namdaemun Market (1,376) | Mangwon Market (1,089) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Describes eating breakfast there, or recommends it for breakfast | 1.2% (18) | 1.2% (16) | 0.6% (6) |
| Japanese-language reviews among those | 9 | 10 | 0 |
| Japanese-language share of the market’s whole sample | 18.4% (268) | 15.3% (210) | 4.4% (48) |
| Puts the opening at about 9 am | 0.3% (5) | 0.4% (5) | 0.5% (5) |
| Arrived in the morning to stalls not yet open, or warns against coming early | 0.4% (6) | 0.5% (7) | 1.7% (19) |
Nineteen of the 40 are written in Japanese: nine of the eighteen at Gwangjang Market and ten of the sixteen at Namdaemun Market. Japanese-language reviews make up 18.4% and 15.3% of those two samples, so they are heavily over-represented among the breakfast reviews. None of the six at Mangwon Market is in Japanese.
Two reviews say why a market is where breakfast happens. One, in Japanese, recommends it to anyone who booked a hotel without breakfast. Another, in Chinese, says breakfast can be hard to find when traveling in Korea and that a market is open before the palaces are.
We were lucky enough to be staying nearby and went there every morning for breakfast. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, December 2024
The trade-off: forty reviews is a small base. It is enough to say which market the breakfast reviews come from and what they name, and not enough to rank anything.
What They Ate: Kalguksu at Namdaemun Market, Bindaetteok and Gimbap at Gwangjang Market
Twenty-six of the 40 reviews name what they had. A review can name more than one dish.
| 🥢 Market | What the review had for breakfast | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Gwangjang Market | Bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) | 4 |
| Gwangjang Market | Gimbap | 4 |
| Gwangjang Market | Kalguksu or dumpling soup | 2 |
| Gwangjang Market | Bibimbap | 2 |
| Gwangjang Market | Tteokbokki | 2 |
| Gwangjang Market | Yukhoe (raw beef) | 2 |
| Gwangjang Market | Live octopus | 2 |
| Gwangjang Market | Vegetable bread | 1 |
| Namdaemun Market | Kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) | 4 |
| Namdaemun Market | Mandu or steamed buns | 4 |
| Namdaemun Market | Galchi jorim (braised hairtail) | 2 |
| Namdaemun Market | Toast | 2 |
| Namdaemun Market | Bibimbap | 1 |
| Mangwon Market | Noodle soup or ramyeon | 2 |
| Mangwon Market | Gimbap, fish cake and fried snacks | 1 |
| Mangwon Market | Tteokbokki | 1 |
At Namdaemun Market the breakfast is a sit-down bowl or something held in the hand. Four reviews name kalguksu, the knife-cut noodles the market has an alley for, and four name mandu or steamed buns. Two name braised hairtail, a full set meal that one reviewer in Japanese calls a lavish way to start the day.
we have breakfast here, very nice knife cut noodle — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 3 stars, April 2025
Bought my breakfast there almost every morning. — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, December 2019
At Gwangjang Market the breakfast list is the market’s ordinary menu eaten early: bindaetteok and gimbap four times each, then soup, bibimbap, tteokbokki, raw beef and live octopus twice each, and a vegetable bread once. Nobody describes a breakfast dish as such.
We came here for a late breakfast/early lunch. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 4 stars, December 2023
The trade-off: these are the same dishes the stalls sell all day, often fried or spicy. If breakfast to you means coffee and something light, two Namdaemun reviews mention toast and one Gwangjang review a vegetable bread; that is all the reviews offer.
How Early Reviewers Found Each Market Open
The three markets start at different hours in the reviews, and inside each market the food and the shops start at different hours too.
Namdaemun Market is the early one. Nine reviews say it trades from the early morning, and reviewers describe eating at 7 and at 8 am. Seven reviewers arrived in the morning and found shops not yet open; three of those seven add that the places serving food were.
Food selection was also great even though a lot of stores were still closed. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, October 2024
At Gwangjang Market five reviews put the opening at about 9 am, and two describe eating there at 8. Six reviewers found stalls not yet open in the morning.
At Mangwon Market five reviews also put the opening at about 9, but that is the hour for produce, meat and fish. Ten say the cooked-food stalls start at around 11.
Most stores only start to open after 9am. Famous green chilli pepper only opens at 11am. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, April 2025
The trade-off: none of this is a timetable. The earliest hours come from a handful of reviews written between 2019 and 2026, and we did not check what any stall does today.
The Quiet Hour Before the Crowd at Gwangjang and Namdaemun Market
The other reason reviewers give for going in the morning is the line. Thirty reviews across the three markets recommend going early, or went early and found it quiet: ten at Gwangjang Market, twelve at Namdaemun Market and eight at Mangwon Market.
Went here at 7AM, there was no line on the famous vegetable hotteok at the entrance. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, October 2024
go early in the morning, no Queues at all — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, November 2025
Four reviews say when the quiet ends. Three at Gwangjang Market and one at Namdaemun Market put the arrival of the crowd at about 11.
I would highly recommend you arrive at about 9 am. From 11am onwards, it can get very crowded. — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 4 stars, June 2025
The trade-off: the hour without a line is the hour with fewer stalls. Reviewers who went early for the calm and reviewers who went early and found shutters are describing the same morning.
Mangwon Market Is the Late Starter
Mangwon Market is where the morning goes wrong most often. Nineteen reviews describe arriving to closed stalls, or warn against coming early, against six at Gwangjang Market and seven at Namdaemun Market. As a share of each sample that is 1.7%, 0.4% and 0.5%.
Ten of the nineteen say the cooked food starts at around 11, and nine of those ten are written in Chinese. Two say outright that they had assumed a market, being a market, opens early.
Recommend to come afternoon when more shops are open. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, August 2025
Six reviews do describe breakfast at Mangwon Market. The one that gives an hour arrived after 10.
The trade-off: Mangwon Market is the market reviewers praise for being local and uncrowded, and it is the one that suits an early start least. A neighborhood market keeps its neighborhood’s hours.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses the rated reviews of the three markets for which we hold a representative sample, collected without filtering by rating: 1,458 for Gwangjang Market, 1,376 for Namdaemun Market and 1,089 for Mangwon Market, from Google Maps and TripAdvisor. A second pass aimed at low ratings is never counted here.
What was read. We searched the 3,923 reviews for words about time in every language in the sample, including breakfast and morning, and read the 551 that matched, in full, in the language they were written in. Forty describe eating breakfast at the market or recommend it for breakfast. Each of the forty was read again for what it says was eaten.
Language. Each review’s language is the one recorded by the platform for the original text.
Counts are floors. A review that describes a morning meal without the words breakfast or morning is not counted.
Current hours were not verified. Opening times change, and a review records what was true on the day it was written.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It states no prices, it does not cover cafés or restaurants outside these three markets, and it does not say which breakfast is best.
