Gwangjang Market and Namdaemun Market Both Get Called Night Markets

Night market is a label visitors bring with them. Ten reviews of Gwangjang Market use it or liken the market to one, and so do ten reviews of Namdaemun Market. Two reviews of Mangwon Market do. The reviews then go on to describe three different evenings.
This article takes the reviews from our three market samples that describe the late afternoon, the evening or the night: 125 of 3,923. Each was read in full and sorted by what the reviewer found.

Found stalls or shops closed or closing from mid-afternoon on, or warns that it closes1.5% (22)1.9% (26)0.3% (3)
The label does not predict the experience. One Namdaemun reviewer came for the night market by name:
when we arrived (~7PM), only few stalls remained opened — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, November 2022
Another, in 2026, found the opposite at the same market:
Very busy night market in the evening in Seoul. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, April 2026
Both are describing Namdaemun Market accurately. They were looking at different parts of it, and the sections below separate the parts.
The trade-off: none of the three is a night market in the sense of a market that opens for the night. Each is a daytime market with a part that keeps going, and which part depends on the market.

Hour by Hour: When Reviewers Found Closures and When They Found Food

Thirty-eight reviews name a clock time. The table sorts their 39 reports by hour and by what the reviewer found; one review reports both a closure and food at the same hour.

At Namdaemun Market the closure reports bunch early. Five of the thirteen fall between 6 and 7 pm, and only one reviewer names an hour at which food was still being served: stalls beginning to close after 10:30 pm.
At Gwangjang Market the two columns overlap from 7 pm on. Of the seven closures reported before 8 pm, four are of shops rather than food stalls, and the food reports start at 7. From 9 pm the reports split evenly, four and four: by then some reviewers found stalls serving and others found them shut.
The trade-off: these are 39 reports spread over seven years and three markets. They show an order of events, shops first and food later. They are too few to give you a closing time, and we have not checked one.

Namdaemun Market at Night: Shops Out, Food Carts In, Wholesale After Ten

Twenty-six reviews say Namdaemun Market closes in the early evening, or describe arriving to find the shops shut.
the market is much better during the day since many stalls close in the evening — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, July 2026
What takes their place is described by 30 reviews: street food and dinner in the evening. Seven say the food carts set up in the late afternoon, as the shops are closing.
A lot of the shops closed down at around 6pm, but a lot of the street food vendors set up around 5 — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, October 2019
Five reviews describe a third shift that most visitors never see: wholesale trading late at night. Two of them give its hours, from 10 or 11 pm to 4 or 5 in the morning. One, from 2019, says it is when to buy children’s clothes in quantity:
There is usually less people at night and this is when the wholesale customers come — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, August 2019
The trade-off: the evening at Namdaemun Market is for eating at a cart. The clothing, souvenirs and glasses that most of its reviews are about are sold by day.

Gwangjang Market at Night: The Food Runs Late, With a Limit

Forty reviews describe Gwangjang Market in the evening or at night with food and people, or recommend going then. Nine name a clock time, from 7 pm to 11 pm.
most of the food vendors stay open late, making this a very vibrant night market — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, February 2025
Twenty-two reviews found something closed from mid-afternoon on. In twelve of them it was the shops that sell fabric, clothing, bedding and dry goods, while the food stalls carried on. Four reviewers who arrived at 8:30 pm or later found many of the food stalls closed, in reviews dated 2024 to 2026.
Closed and dead at 8:30pm on a weekday night. — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 2 stars, June 2026
The trade-off: the hours that reviewers recommend, from about 7, are also the hours when eight reviews say the crowd peaks. Arriving later to avoid it moves you toward the hour when four reviewers found stalls shut.

Mangwon Market After Dark, and Where Reviewers Send You Instead

Mangwon Market has the fewest evening reports. Fourteen reviews describe it in the evening with food and people, and three found it closing. Two of the three name an hour, and both say about 8 pm. Not every reviewer reads that as early:
Closed by 8 so make sure to go earlier than that — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, June 2026
Long operating hours so you cna always pop in for some food. — TripAdvisor review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, April 2024
Six reviews point somewhere else for the evening. Five name Myeongdong, four of them in reviews of Namdaemun Market, and one says that Namdaemun is for the day and Dongdaemun for the night.
the Myeongdong street stalls had much more atmosphere in the evening — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 3 stars, June 2019
We hold no review sample for Myeongdong or Dongdaemun, so we can report that reviewers send people there and nothing about what they find.
Three reviews speak to safety at night. At Gwangjang Market two disagree: one reviewer describes walking around alone late at night at ease, and another, writing in Japanese, describes a companion being followed near the public toilets and advises women not to come at night. One Namdaemun reviewer would not bring children at night and adds that Seoul is very safe.
I walked around late at night by myself and felt completely at ease. — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, March 2026
The trade-off: Mangwon Market is the quietest of the three in the evening and the one with the least evidence about it. Seventeen reviews is a thin base, and we say so.

Methodology

Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses the rated reviews of the three markets for which we hold a representative sample, collected without filtering by rating: 1,458 for Gwangjang Market, 1,376 for Namdaemun Market and 1,089 for Mangwon Market, from Google Maps and TripAdvisor. A second pass aimed at low ratings is never counted here.
What was read. We searched the 3,923 reviews for words about time in every language in the sample and read the 551 that matched, in full, in the language they were written in. Of those, 125 describe the late afternoon, the evening or the night: 54 at Gwangjang Market, 54 at Namdaemun Market and 17 at Mangwon Market. A review can count in more than one row; ten say both that something had closed and that the food was open.
Clock times. The hour table counts only reviews that write down an hour: 28 for closures and 11 for food still being served. A review that says “in the evening” is in the first table and not in the second.
Counts are floors. A review that describes a closed market without any of the words we searched for is not counted.
Current hours were not verified. Opening times change, and a review records what was true on the day it was written. Nothing here is a timetable.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It does not cover Myeongdong, Dongdaemun or any night market outside these three, because we hold no sample for them.
