When visitors review a Seoul market, some of them measure it against Myeongdong, the shopping district whose street food stalls they have already seen. Four mention that they were staying there. In our samples of Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market, 122 reviews name Myeongdong.
One caution before the numbers. We hold no reviews of Myeongdong itself. Everything here is the comparison as written by people reviewing a market.
| 📍 What the review says about Myeongdong | Gwangjang Market (27) | Namdaemun Market (89) | Mangwon Market (6) | All (122) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 💸 The market is cheaper | 8 | 30 | 4 | 42 |
| Prices are about the same | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| 🍢 Myeongdong has the better street food | 4 | 7 | 0 | 11 |
| The market has the better food | 3 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
| The market is more local, less touristy | 1 | 3 | 0 | 4 |
| Names Myeongdong only to say where the market is | 11 | 37 | 2 | 50 |
| Something else: shopping, cosmetics, hours | 1 | 11 | 0 | 12 |
Fifty of the 122 mention Myeongdong only as a landmark. The other 72 compare, and the commonest comparison by far is price. Namdaemun Market accounts for most of them: 89 of its 1,376 reviews name Myeongdong, which is 6.5%.
The trade-off: someone who liked a market enough to review it is not a neutral judge of the place they compare it with. Read these counts as what market-goers say, not as a verdict on Myeongdong.
Is Myeongdong More Expensive Than Namdaemun Market? What 42 Reviews Say
Forty-two reviews say the market is cheaper than Myeongdong: 30 of Namdaemun Market, 8 of Gwangjang Market and 4 of Mangwon Market. Two say prices are about the same. Not one of the 122 says Myeongdong is cheaper.
Prices for most things was cheaper then nearby Myeongdong. — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, March 2024
The reviews are spread from 2019 to 2026 and across languages: 23 in English, eight in Japanese, five in Chinese and six in other languages. Thirty-eight of the 42 come from reviewers who rated the market four or five stars.
The two who disagree do not say Myeongdong is cheaper, only that the gap is not there:
Price of stuff are relatively similar to Myeongdong but higher than dongdaemun. — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, December 2019
The trade-off: forty-two people saying “cheaper” is not a price list. None of them weighed the same item in both places on the same day, and this article states no prices.
What Is Cheaper at the Markets Than in Myeongdong
Twenty-three of the 42 say what they were comparing.
| 🛍️ What the review says is cheaper at the market | Of the 42 reviews |
|---|---|
| Food: street food, snacks, fruit | 9 |
| Souvenirs | 8 |
| Pharmacy goods and cosmetics | 3 |
| Clothing and luggage | 3 |
| Does not say what | 19 |
Food and souvenirs lead, with nine and eight reviews. The food reviews come from all three markets; six of the eight souvenir reviews are about Namdaemun Market.
Souvenirs like keychains and bookmarks were much cheaper than in Myeongdong — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 4 stars, November 2025
Local market with cheap price tags compare to myeongdong market. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, November 2025
The trade-off: nineteen of the 42 say cheaper without saying for what, so the table is a guide to what people had in mind, not a ranking of bargains.
Myeongdong Street Food vs the Markets: Where Myeongdong Wins
On food the comparison turns around. Eleven reviewers prefer Myeongdong’s street food and four prefer the market’s. What the eleven praise is taste, variety, or the street in the evening.
all the stalls offered something different. I wish this market offered that (or at least some type of) dish variety. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 4 stars, October 2019
the Myeongdong street stalls had much more atmosphere in the evening — TripAdvisor review of Namdaemun Market, 3 stars, June 2019
Eight of those eleven rated the market three stars or lower. They are, in other words, the reviewers a market disappointed, saying where they ate better. Among the four who prefer the market, one says its dumplings are made on the spot rather than frozen, and one that its food is more traditional:
Much more traditional food compared to Myeongdong night market, which is targeted for tourists mainly. — Google Maps review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, October 2025
The trade-off: the same stalls are being described from two sides. What one reviewer calls variety, another calls food made for visitors. Which you want is the question, and the reviews cannot settle it for you.
Namdaemun Market Is a Walk From Myeongdong
Thirty-seven Namdaemun reviews bring up Myeongdong only to say the market is near it. Seven give a walking time, and they run from five minutes to twenty-five.
10 mins walk from Myeongdong. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, February 2025
That closeness is why the two get compared, and why reviewers treat them as a pair rather than a choice. Four reviews add that the market feels more local:
More local than MyeongDong, prices are more affordable and some traditional aspect as well. — Google Maps review of Namdaemun Market, 5 stars, October 2024
One Japanese-language review notes the difference in rhythm: Myeongdong stays open late, and Namdaemun Market starts early and closes early.
The trade-off: two places a short walk apart do not have to be ranked. The reviewers who prefer the market for its prices and the ones who prefer Myeongdong for its evening street food are not contradicting each other.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus: the rated reviews of Gwangjang Market (1,458), Namdaemun Market (1,376) and Mangwon Market (1,089) collected without filtering by rating, from Google Maps and TripAdvisor.
No Myeongdong sample. The corpus holds no reviews of Myeongdong. This article uses the 122 market reviews that name it, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese spelling. It is one side of a comparison, and it is presented as that.
What was read. All 122 reviews were read in full, in the language they were written in, and sorted by hand. A review can count under more than one heading: one says the market is cheaper and Myeongdong’s food stalls are better.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words.
What this article does not do. It states no prices and compares none. “Cheaper” is what a reviewer wrote. It also does not say whether Myeongdong is a tourist trap: these reviews do not measure that.
