Which Seoul Market Gets Compared: Everyone Measures Against Gwangjang

Most reviews describe one market. A few name two, and those are the ones written by people in a position to compare. In our samples of Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market, 100 reviews name another of the three.
They do not compare evenly. Gwangjang is the yardstick: 83 of the 100 are reviews of Mangwon or Namdaemun that bring up Gwangjang.

Mangwon MarketGwangjang Market6.2% (68)

Gwangjang MarketNamdaemun Market0.7% (10)
Gwangjang MarketMangwon Market0.1% (2)

Sixty-eight Mangwon reviews mention Gwangjang Market, and two Gwangjang reviews mention Mangwon. More than half of the 68, 36 of them, are written in Chinese, 23 in English and nine in Korean.
The trade-off: a review that names both markets was written by someone who went looking for an alternative to the famous one. Expect it to lean toward the alternative, and read the exceptions closely.

Mangwon Market vs Gwangjang Market: What Reviewers Compare

We read the 68 and noted what each one says one market does better. Sixty-one compare on at least one point; seven only mention the name. A review can give one point to each market.

It's not as big as Gwanjang market but less touristy, less crowded. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, September 2024
One thing goes the other way. Fifteen reviews say Gwangjang Market is bigger or has more to choose from, against three that say so of Mangwon. Thirteen of the fifteen give Mangwon something else in the same review:
The food here is cheaper than Gwangjang market and owner are more friendly. Though choices might be smaller but it is better to be local than tourist market. — TripAdvisor review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, April 2024
On taste the count is smaller: seven reviews say the food is better at Mangwon and one says the opposite.
Personally, I think this is much better than Gwangjang market. Less crowd but wide varieties of street food. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, May 2025
The trade-off: what Mangwon is praised for and what it is faulted for are the same fact. A smaller market in a residential neighborhood is calmer, cheaper and more local, and it has less in it.

What Gwangjang Reviewers Say About the Other Two Markets

Eleven Gwangjang reviews mention Namdaemun Market or Mangwon Market. Seven only name them. Of the other four, two tell the reader to go elsewhere instead, one says Gwangjang charges more than Namdaemun, and one, having tried street food in four parts of the city, calls Gwangjang the best of them.
Gwangjang is going to be much more food focused comparatively. — TripAdvisor review of Gwangjang Market, 5 stars, January 2025
The trade-off: people who reviewed Gwangjang Market mostly did not go on to compare it. The comparison is written from the smaller markets, by visitors who had already been to the big one.

The ratings are close: 4.30, 4.34 and 4.46. No market here is a mistake. The differences are in kind. Mangwon Market is the one written about in Korean and the one comparing reviewers call local and calm. Namdaemun Market is the one its own reviews describe as a place to shop. Gwangjang Market is the one with the most food in one place, and the one every other market gets measured against.
The trade-off: the reviews can tell you which market fits a purpose. They cannot tell you which is best, because the people who wrote them wanted different things.

Methodology

Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus: the rated reviews of Gwangjang Market (1,458), Namdaemun Market (1,376) and Mangwon Market (1,089) collected without filtering by rating, from Google Maps and TripAdvisor.
The comparing reviews. A review enters this article when it is about one of the three markets and names another, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese spelling. There are 100. Each was read in full, in the language it was written in, and sorted by what it says one market does better than the other. Reviews that only mention the other market are counted as mentions and nothing more.
Small numbers. These are counts of reviews, not shares of visitors, and outside the Mangwon and Gwangjang pair they are small. No multiplier is given anywhere in this article.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words.
What this article does not do. It compares three markets, not all of Seoul’s, and it states no prices: “cheaper” here is what a reviewer wrote, not a figure we checked.
