Nobody in our sample timed anything. What 48 reviews do is say when they went and what they found. We read each one and sorted it.
| 🕒 What the review says about timing | Reviews |
|---|---|
| 🌙 Go in the evening, or went at night and found it lively | 15 |
| 👥 When it is packed: weekends, lunch, after 5 | 16 |
| 📅 Sunday or a holiday: non-food sections closed | 6 |
| 🌅 Go early, the morning is quiet | 5 |
| 🚫 Found stalls closed or closing, or warns that they close | 6 |
| All reviews that say when to go | 48 |
The evening has the most advocates. Fifteen reviews either recommend going after dark or describe a night visit that worked. Three add that the fabric and goods sections close as the food side comes alive.
Go there at night time. Less people — Google Maps, 5 stars, June 2025
Later in the evening on weekdays it's not as crowded — TripAdvisor, 5 stars, March 2023
The trade-off: the evening is also when six other reviews report the place shutting down. The two groups are describing different hours of the same night, and the next section is about where the line falls.
Six Report Closed Stalls
Six reviews describe stalls closed or closing. Five arrived to find it; one, written in Korean, warns of it. Five of the six rated the market three stars or lower, which makes this the only timing problem in the sample that shows up in the rating. Three of those who arrived give an hour:
Closed and dead at 8:30pm on a weekday night. — Google Maps, 2 stars, June 2026
We arrived around 9:00pm and about half of the stalls were already closed. — TripAdvisor, 3 stars, June 2024
We arrived at 21:00 on a saturday night and got refused entry to two places that already closed — Google Maps, 2 stars, August 2025
Those three reviews are from 2024, 2025 and 2026. The Korean-language review, from September 2025, gives the same hour as a rule of thumb: on weekdays, it says, nearly everything except the stalls in the central aisle closes at around 9. Against these four, a review from 2019 describes a later night:
the food scene seems to be going strong at least until 10:00 PM — TripAdvisor, 5 stars, September 2019
We cannot tell you from reviews whether the market now winds down earlier than it did, or whether these visitors met an unusual night. Not everyone who came late found shutters: one reviewer in the evening group arrived past 9 pm and still bought snacks. What the reviews support is narrower. The three that arrived to closed stalls at night all describe arriving at 8:30 or later. The other two arrivals are different cases: a visitor on a day tour who saw shops closing at the end of the day, and a 2019 review that describes food stalls closing fast at 3 in the afternoon.
The trade-off: arriving early in the evening to be safe puts you in the hours that four reviewers name as the point where the crowd tips.
The Crowd Has a Schedule, and Weekends Come First
Sixteen reviews describe when the market is packed. They do not agree on an hour, but they agree on the day.
| Among the 16 reviews about the crowd | Reviews |
|---|---|
| Name weekends | 8 |
| Say it is full on weekdays too | 4 |
| Name the hours after 5, or dinner time | 4 |
| Name lunch | 3 |
Place is crowded during weekends and lunch peak hours. — Google Maps, 5 stars, November 2025
it can be REALLY crowded during weekends — Google Maps, 4 stars, May 2026
Four of the sixteen push back on the idea that a weekday solves it, saying the food alleys were full on weekdays as well. Four name the hours after five or dinner time as the point where it tips.
The trade-off: the pillar article for this market found that the crowd is the complaint that separates low reviews from high ones least. Avoiding it makes the visit easier. It is not what decides whether people leave happy.
Five Say the Morning Is the Quiet Window
Five reviews recommend going early. All five rated the market four or five stars. Two are specific:
I would highly recommend you arrive at about 9 am. From 11am onwards, it can get very crowded. — Google Maps, 4 stars, June 2025
If you go early when they first open, you can avoid the huge crowds that accumulate later in the day. — Google Maps, 4 stars, July 2025
The trade-off: the morning visitors describe a quiet market, and the evening visitors describe the one in the videos. Five reviews do not say whether every stall is cooking at nine, and we have not verified it.
On Sundays the Food Stays Open and the Rest Does Not
Six reviews mention a Sunday or a public holiday. They describe the same thing: the food stalls working, and the sections that sell fabric, goods or vintage clothes largely shut.
Rember the vendors are closed on sundays, but the restaurants and street food sellers are open. — TripAdvisor, 5 stars, October 2025
Quite a lot of stalls are closed on Sunday — Google Maps, 4 stars, September 2025
One of the six went on a Sunday specifically for the vintage section and found it closed despite signs saying otherwise. If the food is why you are going, the six reviews suggest a Sunday works. If it is anything else, they suggest it does not.
The trade-off: a Sunday gives you the food alleys with fewer reasons to wander, and it is also a weekend, which is when eight reviewers say the crowd is at its worst.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. The sample is the 1,458 rated reviews of Gwangjang Market collected without filtering by rating — 1,106 from Google Maps and 352 from TripAdvisor, dated March 2019 to September 2026. A second set collected to find low ratings is not counted anywhere in this article.
How the 48 were found. A search for clock times, parts of the day, days of the week and words about opening and closing, in English and Korean, returned 53 reviews. Five mention an hour or a day without saying anything about when to go and were set aside.
How they were sorted. Each of the 48 was read in full and placed in one category by hand, and the assignment is recorded review by review. The second table counts words inside the sixteen crowd reviews; a review can name more than one moment, so its rows do not add up to sixteen.
Language. Reviews in other languages are counted, and one Korean review is described in our words rather than quoted. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included.
What this article does not do. It states no opening or closing time. Reviewers report what they found on one day, across seven years. Hours are a current fact and a review corpus is not a source for them.
