| 📍 What reviews of Mangwon Market name nearby | Reviews |
|---|---|
| 🌊 Hangang Park or the river, as the place to eat what you bought | 19 |
| ☕ Mangnidan-gil, or the cafés and shops around the market | 38 |
| 🪑 A café that lets you bring market food in | 7 |
| 🎸 Hongdae | 21 |
| 🛒 The World Cup Market across the road | 17 |
The river comes up in 19 reviews, the café streets in 38, Hongdae in 21 and the market across the road in 17. A review can be in more than one group.
The trade-off: these are counts of what reviewers chose to mention. They show what people pair with the market. They do not rank the places.
Take It to the River: Hangang Park
Nineteen reviews say the river is close and that the market is where you buy the picnic. Five describe doing it.
After that, I walked to Hangang Park, rented a mat, and had the most chill picnic. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, May 2025
a great place to pickup picnic food supplies — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, August 2026
One group carried fried chicken, hotteok and croquettes to the water after a noodle lunch. A Japanese reviewer bought chicken, tteokbokki and fish cake and notes that many side dishes are sold in small amounts. A Korean reviewer adds bread from the bakeries near the market and spreads a mat by the river.
How far it is depends on who you ask.
Grab a few things, walk five minutes to the river — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, April 2026
The Japanese reviewer puts the walk at about 20 minutes. We did not measure it.
One reviewer turns the pairing into a warning. In a one-star review they call the market small and say not to come
unless you are going to Han River — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 1 star, August 2026
The trade-off: the picnic depends on the weather and on a walk reviewers time at anything from five to 20 minutes. Fried food bought hot will not be hot when you sit down.
A Seat Nearby: The Cafés That Take Market Food
Seven reviews mention a café where you can bring in food bought at the market. Other reviewers note how few seats the market has, and this is the workaround these seven found.
Four of the seven say the condition is a drink: one per person, in one reviewer’s words, as a courtesy to the owner. Three Korean reviews place a café in the middle of the market, and one of them says it is in the merchants’ association building. A reviewer writing in Chinese places one beside the public toilet, and another mentions one next to the hotteok stall.
The seventh is a complaint. A Korean one-star review says the café in the middle refuses people who arrive with too much rubbish, and applies that rule as it pleases.
The trade-off: the reviews run from 2023 to 2026 and may describe more than one café. We did not verify which are open today or what their rules are.
Mangnidan-gil and the Café Streets
Twelve reviews name Mangnidan-gil, nine of them in Korean. Another 26 mention the cafés, restaurants and small shops around the market without naming the street.
It was a nice walk from there through Mangnidangill, too. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, September 2026
Amazing little cafes and restaurants around it — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, September 2025
A Japanese reviewer explains the name: as the market’s food stalls drew visitors, stylish cafés and restaurants opened around it, and the area picked up the nickname. Korean reviewers mention shops selling small design goods, good for gifts, and small restaurants in refitted old buildings. One reviewer waited in a nearby café for the stalls to open at eleven.
Not every Korean reviewer is pleased. One, in a three-star review, says the market filled up once the street became famous and that every stall raised its prices together. Another says Mangnidan-gil is now too well known and crowded. A third shrugs at the market and prefers the alleys behind it, where the small cafés are.
The trade-off: the same fame that put cafés around the market is what local reviewers blame for the crowds and prices inside it.
Pairing It With Hongdae
Twenty-one reviews name Hongdae, many of them to say the two belong in the same day.
Since this market is near Hongdae — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 4 stars, August 2025
One reviewer writing in Chinese walked from Hongdae in 30 minutes. Another took a bus from the Hongdae shopping area. A Korean reviewer gives an order for the day: Mangwon Market at lunchtime, Hapjeong in the afternoon, Hongdae in the evening. A reviewer writing in Chinese adds that snacks and fruit cost less at the market than around Hongdae.
Two reviewers set a limit on that.
but otherwise, you might prefer the more central markets — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, January 2026
The trade-off: Mangwon Market is out of the way for a visitor staying in the center. Reviewers who recommend it mostly recommend it as part of a day on that side of the city.
The World Cup Market Across the Road
Seventeen reviews mention a second market facing Mangwon Market across the road.
very close (across one street) to World Cup Market — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, December 2022
Korean reviewers call the two twins, joined like one market with a road through it. Two say the World Cup Market has far fewer people. One says it is small.
Two Korean reviewers make a sharper point: Mangwon Market has become a street of prepared food, and the market across the road is where to do actual grocery shopping. Two recommend a rice-cake shop at the entrance of the World Cup Market, one of them at 2,000 won a pack in December 2023.
The trade-off: a visitor looking for things to eat on the spot is in the right market already. The one across the road is for the shopping bag.

Take MRT to the Mangwon Station and walk around 10 minutes to reach the entrance. — Google Maps review of Mangwon Market, 5 stars, May 2025
Four reviewers say about five minutes and four say about ten. Two say to turn right out of Exit 2, and one of them adds to keep straight until the market entrance appears on the right. Eight mention the fruit shops along the way, and two say the stalls outside are cheaper than those inside.
One older review found the walk harder.
there is no sign to this market from mangwon exit — TripAdvisor review of Mangwon Market, 2 stars, January 2019
That was December 2018, and the reviewer had to ask several people. Seven reviews came by bus: one bus from Myeongdong, a bus from Seoul Station that took about 30 minutes, and buses from the Hongdae area. We did not verify bus routes. Six reviews, five of them Korean, say parking is difficult.
The trade-off: the exit and the distance are the verified part. Walking times are reviewers’ own, and they differ by a factor of two.
Methodology
Figures come from the SeoulFoodTour research corpus. This article uses a sample of 1,089 rated reviews of Mangwon Market from Google Maps and TripAdvisor, collected without filtering by rating.
What was counted. A search for the river, the neighborhood, Hongdae, cafés, the station and buses, in every language in the sample, matched 139 reviews. Each was read and sorted by hand. A review can be counted in more than one group.
Counts, not rates. Every figure from reviews here is a count. Reviews mention what is nearby only when it mattered to that visit, so the counts are floors.
The verified fact. The subway line, station, exit and distance come from the official Visit Seoul listing for Mangwon Market, read on 9 October 2026, and not from reviews. Reviews agree with it.
Quotations. Every quotation is from a review written in English and is reproduced exactly as it appears in the original record, spelling included. Reviews in other languages are counted and described in our words, never quoted.
What this article does not do. It does not measure walking times, verify bus routes, or confirm that any café or shop is open today. A review records what one visitor found on one day.
