Does Google Maps Work in Korea? What 151 Accounts Say

Reviews of Seoul’s markets almost never mention a map app, so this article uses a different source: first-hand accounts posted on Reddit and YouTube by people who traveled or live in Korea. We read every one that names Naver Map or Kakao Map.

Forty-two of the 151 accounts say Google Maps does not work for navigation in Korea. The dated ones run from 2018 to September 2026. Nine say what is missing: walking or driving directions.
Seven of the 42 were written in 2026, between January and September. One of them, from May 2026, adds that this is changing. Travelers in August 2026 describe navigation as the biggest struggle of their trip: Google Maps showed them public transport only.
Four accounts go the other way. A resident who lived in Seoul from 2023 to 2025 found Google Maps fine for subway and bus, and often better than the Korean apps at offering routes with the least walking. A traveler in 2024 found Kakao Map hard to use because of the language and used Google Maps instead, following the blue dot where walking directions were missing.
What we checked. Korea’s government gave Google conditional approval in 2026 to export map data. We searched on October 8, 2026 and found no announcement that walking or driving navigation had launched.
The trade-off: Google Maps is the app visitors already know and the one whose reviews they can read. In these accounts it is where a trip is planned, not how the walk from the station is done.
Fifty-six accounts say Naver Map got them around accurately. The praise is specific. Three mention that it gives the number of the subway exit to take, and three that it says which car or door to board for a faster transfer. Two say it shows pedestrian crossings along the walking route. One traveler found it more accurate than the display at the bus stop, and another notes that it estimates the fare.
Two families with strollers used the option to avoid stairs. Both found it useful, and one adds that it sometimes missed elevators that did exist and that zooming in on the station showed where the lifts were.
The trade-off: it is a second app with its own interface. One traveler calls it essential and frustrating in the same sentence, and another warns that running it all day drains the phone and packed a power bank.

The Search Problem: English Names Often Fail

Nineteen accounts say that searching Naver Map or Kakao Map in English did not find the place. One traveler typed “grocery store” and got businesses with those words in their name. A Korean speaker notes that searching “restaurants” on Naver Map returned only non-Korean food, and that Korean restaurants appear under the Korean word for Korean food. A visitor without a Korean keyboard says even the hotel concierge struggled to enter a restaurant into the app on their phone.
Sixteen travelers settled on two apps: Google Maps to find the place, and Naver Map or Kakao Map to get there. Seven of them describe the same move, which is to copy the name or the address in Korean from Google Maps and paste it into the Korean app. A vegetarian traveler searched “vegetarian food” on Google Maps, which looks through reviews, and then pasted the address into Naver Map.
The trade-off: the two-app habit works and costs a step every time. One traveler who used it throughout says it worked most of the time, not always.
Naver Map is named in 127 of the accounts and Kakao Map in 54. That is how often each comes up among people who post in English, not a measure of which is better.
Six accounts say Kakao Map has less English or needs some Hangul. Seven navigated with Kakao Map and were happy with it. One of them ran it in Korean on purpose, liked that it counted down to the second when the bus would arrive, and still says Naver Map is the better choice for someone who cannot read Hangul.
Eight accounts use Kakao Map for restaurant reviews. A Seoul local says the ratings on Naver Map are inflated and Kakao Map’s less so. One traveler treats 4.0 on Kakao Map as very good and 4.5 as excellent; another warns that Kakao reviews are harsh and a busy restaurant with 2.5 can be good enough.
Six accounts choose restaurants by a rating threshold, between 4.0 and 4.6, and four warn that a high rating guarantees little. One traveler in 2026 describes restaurants offering a free soda or side dish in exchange for a five-star review. Four accounts mention that reviews on Naver Map flag whether a place is good for solo diners; two describe a rice-ball icon.
The trade-off: one commenter says the two apps have the same features and nobody needs both. Another kept both for a reason: one set to English to read, one in Korean to show a taxi driver.

Where Naver Map Fails

Ten accounts describe Naver Map letting them down. Three are outside the big cities. On the east coast in 2023, the app, the electronic sign at the stop and the paper timetable gave three different bus times. On Geoje Island in 2026, bus routes and frequencies were listed inaccurately and the app was wrong about which stretches could be walked. In Gyeongju, one traveler found Kakao Map more reliable for bus times.
Four are about what happens below ground or at the exit. A traveler in 2022 notes that when the walking route passes through an underground shopping arcade, the app does not say so in English, and you stand at a road with no crossing. Another was sent to a subway exit when the entrance they needed was inside the mall.
Six accounts ran into something that asked for a Korean phone number, ID or card. Saved lists need a login. Booking a restaurant or buying a ticket through Naver needs Korean verification, and Naver Pay needs a Korean card. Travelers who hit this walked in without a booking or used the tablet at the restaurant door, and report it was fine.
The worst case is one traveler in 2025 who registered and verified a Naver account before the trip and saved every hotel and place in it. A week in, the account was suspended as suspicious, the recovery pages were only in Korean, and everything saved was gone. Their advice: do not keep your places only in Naver Map.
The trade-off: three accounts advise creating the Naver account before the trip, and it is the account that failed in the worst case. Most accounts navigate without mentioning an account at all; one says it has to be set up first.

Methodology

This article does not use the same source as our research on Seoul’s markets. Those articles count rated reviews from Google Maps and TripAdvisor. A map app appears in six of those 3,923 reviews of Gwangjang Market, Namdaemun Market and Mangwon Market, which is too few to say anything. So we read the part of the SeoulFoodTour research corpus that comes from Reddit and YouTube.
What was read. A search for Naver Map and Kakao Map matched 225 posts and comments. We read the passage around every mention of a map app. Seventy-four were set aside: 42 are lists of links or noise, 23 were written by people still planning or asking, and 9 are duplicates. The remaining 151 are first-hand accounts from people who traveled or live in Korea: 149 from Reddit and 2 from YouTube.
What the numbers are. Counts of accounts, classified by hand. They are floors, and they are not rates: people who post on a Korea travel forum are not a sample of visitors, and that forum recommends Naver Map every week. Of the 101 accounts with a date, 68 are from 2024 or later.
Quotations. The accounts are described in our words and not quoted.
What this article does not do. We did not test the apps. Apps change, and the status of Google Maps in Korea is changing now: check before you travel. An account from 2023 describes the apps of 2023.
